It turned out that one of our API servers was having intermittent problems connecting to external systems (most importantly Weather Underground’s system). We haven’t yet figured out what exactly was going wrong but for the time being we have taken the problem server out of our cluster and replaced it with a new one. As the problems were intermittent, and the affected server was only one of several, hopefully the effects of this downtime were not too serious.
Our monitoring systems didn’t spot the issue as quickly as we would have liked because the problems were only affecting one of the servers in our cluster, and only some of the time. We will be looking into this further to see what we can do to reduce the chances of something similar happening again.
